Let’s be honest — 2020 has been a hot mess. It’s been all over the place…but now more than ever, it’s important to pause, reflect, and plan for what you want to accomplish in 2021.
For the last three years, I’ve taken time between Christmas and New Years’ to walk myself through a very specific exercise — and I’ll be doing it again this year too.
This exercise is so powerful because it helps you recognize and celebrate your wins, move on from things that didn’t go as planned, help you prepare for the coming year, and create the year you desire. One of Advisori Insiders Pro mentors even said this exercise was a huge game-changer for her business and made 2020 better than she could have ever imagined! She hit the goals she specifically laid out from this exercise that I’m sharing with you today!
The whole exercise is just answering a series of questions, so grab a paper and pen and walk yourself through the following questions below:
Reflecting on 2020
What was your biggest triumph in 2020? What was the smartest decision you made in 2020?
What is one word that best sums up and describes your 2020 experience?
What was the greatest lesson you learned?
What was the most loving service you performed in 2020?
What are you most happy about completing In 2020? What is your biggest piece of unfinished business?
Who were the three people that had the greatest impact on your life this past year?
When you’re answering these questions, know that they don’t have to just be about your business, they can be about your life. This is because your life and your business are one — that’s the whole point of having your own business! Before you go into the next portion of the exercise, I want you to make sure you complete those questions above.
Creating 2021
What would you like to be your biggest triumph in 2021?
What advice would you like to give yourself in 2021?
What is the major effort you are planning to improve your financial results in 2021?
What would you be most happy about completing in 2021?
What major indulgence are you willing to experience in 2021?
What would you most like to change about yoursel in 2021?
What do you think your biggest risk will be in 2021?
What are you most committed to changing and improving in 2021?
What is one undeveloped talent you are willing to explore in 2021?
What brings you the most joy? How are you going to do or have more of that in 2021?
Who or what? Other than yourself are you most committed to loving and serving in 2021?
Side note: from 2018 to 2019 my answer to that question was Sam and our baby. At the time, we didn’t even know I was pregnant yet. We actually found out on January 6 of 2019 that we were pregnant with Lauren. So it’s just really cool how this exercise really does work!
And finally: What one word would you like to have as your theme for 2021?
I’m not kidding, this exercise of remembering and completing the current year and creating the new year is so powerful. If you have a journal, I highly recommend writing your answers in it so you can reflect and make sure you’re on that path throughout the year!
If you feel comfortable, I’d love for you to share some of your answers with me. Send me a DM on Instagram or even put it in a story and tag me. I love hearing how these exercises help you figure out what you want and help you make it happen. I will see you in 2021!
