Why am I talking about this? Because almost 100% of the businesses that I talk to, when I ask them what their goal is, they say to grow awareness.
If growing awareness of your services or products is one of your goals, type “ME!” in the comments below.
Now, brand awareness is a great start, because if we want to grow our business, more people need to know about what you have to offer. However, just wanting brand awareness doesn’t really mean anything. Typically, when a business says I want to grow my brand awareness or awareness of my business and what I have to offer, what they really mean is they want more customers, clients, and sales.
Because you can’t be a business without sales.
Now, the other problem about when we’re just talking about brand awareness is that it really means you just want more people to know about what you have to offer. However, if you are a small business, you shouldn’t want just more people to know about you. You want the RIGHT people to know about you. That’s why, unless you’re a large brand or you have a service or product that the general public is going to use, those traditional advertising methods to grow your brand like TV, radio, out of home billboards, or even print, aren’t necessarily the best way to get the right people and get more clients and customers.
So what should you do instead?
Well, first and foremost, instead of saying I just want more people to know about what I have to offer, you have to think about how can I reach more of the right people about what I have to offer? And one of the best ways to do that is by using digital marketing.
Now, I have an extensive background in TV, radio and digital and I will tell you if you are a small business you should not be wasting your money on traditional advertising methods because when you’re doing that you only get to choose the gender, like women, men or all adults. Or you choose really broad ages from 18 to 35, and let’s be real, an 18-year-old is very different than a 35-year-old, or 25 to 54 years old. Again, very different. That’s all you get to choose, big age ranges and gender, but with digital marketing, you’re able to find the exact right people who are your ideal customers and clients and get in front of them. What that means is that your dollars are working harder for you and your business.
When you are talking about just growing brand awareness, getting in front of more people, you have no real way to actually follow up with them. When was the last time that you saw a commercial on TV and immediately went and bought whatever they were selling? You probably haven’t, right? People have to be reminded. They have to see what you have to offer multiple times before they take an action and the really, really cool thing about digital marketing is that you can grow your awareness with the right people and then also follow up with them to remind them of what you have to offer to get them to like, know, and trust you. You can give them reasons over a short period of time of why they should choose you instead of another company or product and then actually convert them into a purchase or a client.
Pretty cool, right? So let’s recap.
So when I’m talking about how to increase your brand awareness, I’m saying that instead, you need to be thinking about how you increase sales and get in front of the right people. In order to do that, you have to use things like digital marketing, email marketing, Facebook and Instagram ads, and Google search. All of those things are really going to help to build your brand awareness, but also make sure that you’re getting in front of the right people and getting your dollars to work harder for you.
