This isn’t one of those. This is meant to help you decide whether or not starting your own business is right for you.
I’m a huge advocate of starting your own business, but it’s not for everyone. Asking yourself these five questions will help you determine if you’re ready to take the leap and will thrive as your own boss.
Comment below if you’ve wanted to start a business, but aren’t sure if you’re ready!
Don’t worry about your five-year plan, for now, start by asking yourself these five questions.
Why are you starting your business?
Sometimes this question can be confusing. I’m not asking what result you want from your business. For example, money is a result. Sure, you want to make money, but it’s not why you’re starting this business.
What will that money allow you to do? Be less stressed and happier because you’ll be able to pay off debt and not have the weight of it following you around? Buy a house so you can have a yard for your dog or kids? Travel the world, so you can experience new cultures and eat the most amazing food?
You get my point. You need to know your WHY.
Your WHY will help you build a successful business without burning out and will get you through the hard days.
Your why might not be as clear as you think it should be. If it doesn’t come to you right away, that’s okay and it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t start your own business. You just need to dig a little deeper. If you’re not sure, watch this video from Simon Sinek, the father of the why!
How do you define success?
I told you we were going deep! It’s important to decide what your version of success is when you start a business. You don’t want to chase someone else’s version and wake up one day feeling like you’re somewhere you don’t want to be.
Is your version of success having enough money to live well? Is it to build a business with a small team of other like-minded individuals? Is it to build an empire and make millions?
None of those are more valid than the next, but knowing where you want to be is crucial to creating the roadmap to get there.
Are you willing to invest in yourself?
Starting a business is anything but free. You’re creating your freedom, but it takes investment and belief in yourself.
Investments are scary and every business owner has been there. It takes time and money to start your own business, but investing in yourself is a low risk.
If you shift your mindset to seeing that investment as a small price to pay for your dream life, your fear will turn into excitement and drive.
Are other people doing what you want to do?
I’m not asking this for the reason you may think. Your instinct might tell you that if no one else is doing it then it’s better for you. You have an opportunity to seize the moment. But, maybe no one is doing it because there’s no demand for it?
If people have growing businesses in the area you want to start, it’s a sign that there are people who actually want to buy what you’re selling.
I’m not saying you’re one-of-a-kind business won’t work, but do your research and make sure there is a demand for what you’re selling.
What will it mean if you don’t start this business?
This might be the most important question.
You know what it would mean to you to start your own business, but what would it mean if you didn’t?
Would you regret it? Would you constantly wonder if that business would have worked and you could be living your dream life?
The real risk of not pursuing your own business is not what you invest, but how you would feel if you didn’t give yourself that chance to grow!
You already have everything you need to start, but I know that fear of failure holds a lot of people back from taking the leap
And that’s why I created…
